Our story

Dr. Jerome Smith grew up in Lafayette and has practised dentistry in Acadiana for more than forty years. His nephew Danny grew up here too, practised in Lake Charles, then came home to join him. Other dentists now travel to this office to learn the implant work the two of them do here.

Dr. Smith has been placing and restoring implants for more than three decades. Dr. Domingue became the youngest dentist in the world to be made a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology, the highest award open to a general dentist practising implantology.

Born and raised in Lafayette. He graduated cum laude from the University of Louisiana, then from LSU School of Dentistry in 1980 as a member of the C. Edmund Kells Society. More than forty years of general dentistry in Acadiana, with implant dentistry and adult reconstruction at the centre of it for the last thirty-six.

Dr. Danny Domingue, DDS

Born and raised in Lafayette, a St. Thomas More and LSU graduate. After dental school in New Orleans came a general practice residency and an implantology fellowship at Brookdale University Hospital in New York, then several years in practice in Lake Charles before he joined his uncle's practice.

Hygienists, assistants, the front office, a treatment coordinator who also runs the lab, and sterilization. The doctors believe in ongoing training, and the team trains alongside them.

Dental implants & bone grafting

Planned in 3-D, placed and restored in one office.

Placement and restoration both happen in this office, so the whole process stays with the dentists who planned it. If you have been told you do not have enough bone, grafting is done here as well.

  1. Consultation. Your health history, a 3-D cone beam scan and digital impressions.
  2. Preparation. Any extractions under local anaesthetic, and bone grafts given time to heal.
  3. Placement. The titanium post, with IV or oral sedation if you choose it.
  4. Restoration. An abutment, then a crown, bridge or denture matched to your teeth.

Dental anxiety keeps up to thirty percent of Americans from routine care. This is one of only a few offices in Louisiana to offer IV sedation, as often or as rarely as you need it.

How it works

A calming medication given through an IV works almost at once. For anyone afraid of needles, a topical anaesthetic numbs the spot first.

Who it helps

A severe fear of the dentist, a strong gag reflex, or a hard time getting numb. It also makes long procedures easier to get through.

A full medical history comes first. A team member stays by your side for the whole procedure. Complications are extremely rare.

Mission work

Some of the work happens in Guerrero, Mexico.

Dr. Smith co-founded the Mexico Medical/Dental Project with Latin World Ministries. He and Dr. Domingue have taken hundreds of dental students from LSU and A.T. Still, with physicians, nurses and volunteers, to care for people there who have little or no access to it. Closer to home, the dentists volunteer at local community clinics.

A two-day course on dental implants for general practitioners, held in this office every March and November, with live surgery and lectures. Dr. Smith co-founded it in 2003 and teaches it with Dr. Domingue, and all of the proceeds go to the Mexico Medical/Dental Project.

Common questions

What people ask before they book.

Another dentist told me I cannot have implants. Can you help?

Most likely. The usual reason is not enough jawbone, and both doctors have advanced training in bone grafting, which rebuilds it so an implant can go in. The only way to know is an evaluation here, with a 3-D scan. If implants turn out not to be right for you, bridges, partials and dentures are all done in this office too.

How long does a dental implant take?

Usually four to six months from start to finish, and longer when a bone graft is needed first. The implant is placed, the bone is given time to bond to it, an abutment goes on, and then the crown, bridge or denture that matches your other teeth.

Will I know what is happening under IV sedation?

Most patients who have IV sedation are completely comfortable and remember little or nothing of the procedure. A member of the team stays with you throughout. You will need someone to drive you home and to stay with you for the rest of the day.

Is a dental bridge or a dental implant better?

Both are reliable. A bridge fills the gap using the teeth either side, which have to be prepared for it. An implant leaves those teeth alone, helps preserve the bone and is cared for much like a natural tooth. The exam decides which suits you.

Do you take my insurance?

The practice participates with all insurances and will help with claims. It also accepts cash, checks and all major credit cards, and offers financing through CareCredit and LendingClub, subject to credit approval.
